Hand-knotted wool rug

A handmade rug is created in six main stages: design, material selection, dyeing, hand-knotting, washing and finishing. Every step is done by hand, which is why a single rug can take weeks or months to complete. Here is the full journey from loom to living room.

The 6 stages of making a handmade rug

  1. Design: the pattern is charted knot-by-knot on graph paper called a Talim.
  2. Material: premium natural fibres — wool, cotton, silk — are selected.
  3. Dyeing: yarns are dyed in controlled batches for rich, colourfast tones.
  4. Knotting: artisans tie every knot by hand on a loom — 100 to 500 per square foot.
  5. Washing: the rug is washed to soften the pile and bring out the colour.
  6. Finishing: edges are hand-bound, the pile is clipped even, and the rug is inspected.
